The technology environment
-
Communications channels have increased significantly since 1989. A wide range of different, sometimes competing, channels are available to learners and to organisations.
20 years ago colleges kept students at arms length, conducting a dialogue with students via entry forms, information sheets and public meetings. Personal needs were theoretically attended to through a pastoral system of sorts.
Colleges, WBL and ACL organisations have all adopted technology to channel learning opportunities to students.
Many students have enthusiastically employed technology both for their academic work and for their social communications.

The student in this video was interviewed for the JISC Lex study - her use of technology is fairly typical of most students at college now.

Listening to learners
First ask yourselves:
Why are we doing this? What advantage will it bring to us or our students? What information do we need to improve the college? How can we engage learners in the learning process? Do we want to?
The LSC booklet below gives a guide to the issues involved.
