How can Moodle be used?

  • Moodle is essentially a website that has a number of templates and resources that can used and adapted as required. At a simple level it makes it easy for those people with no experience of web development to create online resources to share.

With this in mind ... Moodle can be used in a number of different ways depending on the needs of the people who are going to be using it. Here are some ways in which it can be used:

    • to share resources, online ... 24 hour a day availabilty
    • to enable communication ... forums, chat, messages
    • to add interactivity ... quizzes, communication tools, learning objects
    • to enable collaboration ... wikkis, the glossary and database tools
    • to allow for distance learning ... available on the web
    • to support blended learning ... used in conjunction with traditional face to face teaching
    • to reduce workload ... online assignment submission and marking, self marking quizzes
    • ...

Most small moodle sites concentrate on only a few of these functions - typically it is used initially to provide resources for its users, and then developed into a communication and interactive learning tool.

Direct students to useful websites

  • Lists of websites are useful guides to students. Adding them to your Moodle course is an easy process.(See how it's done)
  • You may also want to add some information about the website or suggest tasks to the user. This can be done by adding a label to the course, which contains both your text and the relevant web address. (Watch a demonstration)

Communicate with students

  • Moodle has facilities to communicate with learners in a variety of ways. For most methods of communication the learners will need to log on to the site, because the system needs to know the email address of the learner in order to send out messages.

    Forums

Forums can be added to courses and tutors or learners can use the forum to send messages to everyone on the forum. (See how it's done) Note that learners have to log on to the system to use the forums.

    Chat online

If learners are logged on to the system at the same time as yourself you can communicate directly with them using the Chat system built into Moodle. (Watch this in action). As with forums, users need to have a username and password and be logged into the system to use chat.

Set quizzes and games for students

  • Questions and quizzes can be added to your Moodle to provide a quick form of assessment or revision. If your learners are logged onto the Moodle the system will keep track of the scores, so that you, as the teacher, can keep track of how your students are doing.

The quiz system on Moodle has a question bank which stores all the questions you set. This first demonstration shows how to add a true/false question to the question bank. The second demonstration shows how a multiple choice question is constructed.

The last demonstration shows how to use the questions to create a quiz.
